The Exo Terra Terrarium Thermometer Review

When housing reptiles or amphibians, it’s critical to ensure their happiness.  And their happiness begins with some of the tastiest online crickets, and with the atmosphere of their habitat.  In most domestic situations, their habitat is a terrarium.  And in most terrarium situations, they require specific specific temperatures, and specific humidity levels.

But keeping track of those vital measurements consistently can be daunting.  Because you may think you have a very personable bearded dragon, he or she still won’t be able to express their dissatisfaction with the way you upkeep their home.

Which is why the Exo Terra Terrarium Thermometer and Hygrometer is an excellent tool for maintaining herps.

What does a Hygrometer do?

It’s not a term we use regularly around here.  But the complete definition is an instrument that is used to measure the water-vapor content of the atmostphere.  So if you’re housing a thirsty amphibian like a poison dart frog or salamander, then a hygrometer/temperature combo will be a great tool for your beloved pet’s upkeep.  And look here if you’re looking for copious amounts of hygrometers.

And one of the best features that the Ex Terra offers is its design.  It comes equipped with a 36″ probe.  And contrary to your perverse expectations, this probe is not intended to be used on a human body.  This probe gets settled into the medium inside the terrarium.  And because of this probe, the device is able to accurately calculate the humidity readings, and the temperature inside the terrarium.

And in addition to the accessibility of the 3′ probe, the unit also comes with a simple, 1-button interface.  This 1 button allows you to control the settings, and quickly transition back and forth from the temperature reading to the humidity reading.  This gives you the advantage and versatility to better accommodate for your beloved animal.

And not only is it designed with a 3′ probe, it can also retrieve previous readings.  It comes equipped with a solid memory that can store up to the previous 12 readings.  So if you’re really particular with your pet’s health and well-being, then you can monitor and document his behavior in each varying atmospheric setting, and then use the Exo Terra Thermometer/Hygrometer as a useful guide to sustain those happy levels.

But aside from these obvious benefits that are immediately noticed, there have been some recognized draw backs from the beloved herpetology community.

Reading through the reviews, it appears that some buyers had climate control expectations.  So let’s put that notion out the open right away.  This does not change or alter the temperature or humidity level.  That would make it a thermostat.  This is only a gauge.  It cannot control the atmosphere.  So just do your self a favor, and don’t pretend to think that this is a thermostat.

In addition to the performance misconceptions, there have also been a few reports that the hygrometer may be faulty.  A few reviewers have express that there is difficulty in getting a consiistent reading.  However, I’m not sure how they would know that, unless they have a calibrated hygrometer on hand.  And if they had a calibrated hygrometer on hand, why would they waste $20 to buy a new one?  Just to test it?  It doesn’t make sense to me.  So let’s not put a lot of value in those reviews.

But one of the the largest drawbacks may be that the Exo Terra Terrarium Thermometer is designed to work with the Exo Terra Compact Top and Dual Canopy.  If you’re providing for your little friend with another type of terrarium, then this dual thermometer may not serve as the best possible unit.  Parts may not fit together appropriately, and the length of the probe may not be best suited for another type of terrarium.

But although this may be a nuisance for non Exo Terra Compact owners, it can prove to be a valuable selling point for many Exo Terra Compact owners.  Each product is specifically designed to support each other.  So not only is this a dual thermometer, but it can serve as a dual system, when combined with the terrarium it was designed to work with.

So although it may be perceived as a negative, there is certainly some great value in having the specific terrarium this thermometer/hygromter was designed for.

Overall…

Overall, if you’re looking for a dual thermometer/hygrometer, then this is an excellent option.  It has accuracy, and comes equipped with the bare minimum essentials to make sure you’re getting the readings and the accuracy that you need to monitor your pet’s habitat.

And if you have the terrarium that this thermometer is specifically designed to work with, then you’ll need no other excuses to make this purchase.  But if you have a different terrarium, then you should make sure that this thermometer/hygrometer fits properly into your unit.  Because the last thing you’ll want to do is purchase something that doesn’t benefit your amphibian’s well-being.
