There are a quite few of different thermal hunting scopes on the market. And between the different brands (Flir, Sig Sauer), distance, magnification, it can be challenging to find the one that will improve your performance or being the best thermal scope.
And ATN Thor HD 384 Smart Thermal Riflescope is one of the most technologically advanced scopes available. By combining their ATN OTS-384 thermal smart HD monoculars optics with some of the most accurate range detecting metrics, hunters have been able to increase their yield with less ammunition.
With a few motions, you can utilize ATN’s patent pending smart range finder. Point the reticle to the top of the target, and then to the bottom, and the OST will automatically calculate the range. This eliminates the need to for onsite calculations, or trying to memorize charts.
And not only will you increase your yield, but you can film hunt. Record live video, and study the film so you can improve your game, and bring home an even greater yield during the next exhibition.
Overall, between the technological advances, and some of the most reliable thermal detection in the industry, ATN’s OTS is an excellent option for any hunting enthusiast. And it’s an excellent option if their Thor product line doesn’t have all the features a serious hunter is looking for.
Review of ATN OTS HD 384 Smart Thermal Monocular
Sighting technology is, for the most part, mature. We’ve had magnified optics for decades bordering on centuries, now. Red-dot sights are newer, but have still had several decades over which to reach equilibrium between price and performance.
Newer still are infrared, light-amplification and thermal imaging, which—though in use with our Armed Forces for many years—are in the nascent phase of technological acceptance.
Light and easy
With that in mind, the ATN OTS HD 384 Smart Thermal Monocular is a hearty step in the right direction. It’s small, light, easily to transport, and runs on a single CR123 battery. Which makes the utility of this scope much easier than having to carry a backpack full of batteries to run a device like a laser sight. While the hand-held units we’re seeing right now might appear limited in use, the technology is just barely getting started, and it’s quite likely we’ll see an explosion in thermal-imaging devices in the coming years.
You might wonder what use a hand-held thermal imager would have in the realm of self-defense, and that’s a valid question. For the hunters out there, having a small, light device that can “find” game in the dark or in heavy brush is invaluable; for the home defender it’s a tougher sell. However, if you hear a crash in the backyard, a quick glance through the ATN OTS HD 384 Smart Thermal Monocular will let you know if it’s a raccoon getting into your trash cans or a bipedal interloper that requires a call to 911. Don’t rely on it for threat-identification, though: At backyard distances, you’ll be able to tell a human from a deer, but that’s about the extent of the resolution.
The OTS-HD 384 4.5-18×50 Thermal Digital Monocular from ATN features gyroscopic image stabilization that keeps the image steady at higher power. The OTS-HD can capture 1280 x 960 still images or video at 30 fps and saves them to an on-board microSD card slot. A micro-HDMI output lets you display the captured photos or video to a computer or TV for playback and storage. An easier way to share images is to use the built-in Wi-Fi. It features a Smart Range Finder, with only two clicks and a simple shift of the scope you will be able to range your target. Once ranged in your reticle, it will automatically adjust its point of impact.
Connect the monocular to any device running the free Obsidian app and stream the current view, save images to the device, and instantly post them on social media, message them, or email them to friends and family. A built-in GPS antenna enables geo-tagging your photos or video so you can map where every image was taken. The GPS system will also log your altitude and speed so you’ll know if you’ll make your next waypoint on-time or if you need to pick up your pace.
By utilizing the ATN Obsidian app, you can control your device and view live streaming. Connect a phone or tablet and view everything simultaneously. Want to see what you’ve recorded so far? No problem, once connected to the app via WiFi, open up the Gallery and playback your latest adventures. All your photos and videos are right at your fingertips.
The OTS-HD 384 4.5-18×50 Thermal Digital Monocular has many excellent features and one of such features is the smart shooting solution. With the smart shooting function, you don’t need to waste your time doing things such as memorizing charts, working complex calculations or guessing. The ATN’s Smart Range Finder will do all these for you. With only a few clicks and a quick shift of the scope, the Smart Range Finder will allow you to quickly range in on your target. After your target has been ranged in, the reticle sets to work by adjusting its point of impact. The end result of all this is an increased chance of making a perfect shot every time.
- It is very easy to use
- It has easy to use controls
- It produces excellent images
- It comes with an E-Compass and an E-Barometer
- It has an ergonomic design
- No real cons to speak of
For now, the ATN OTS HD 384 Smart Thermal Monocular remains a dedicated, hand-held thermal device. It’s excellent for hunters looking to spot an animal’s heat signature at night, or for a home defender to locate things that go bump in the night. The price may appear steep for initial entry into thermal-imaging optics, but compared with the going rate for such devices even in the past couple of years, it’s a sea change in availability.
